Blog - Writing Craft

This builds from the Stolen Voices game two weeks ago. It's a little more difficult, but can be a lot of fun.

You will need: a novel you have never read, preferably by an author you don't know. Books that are from series or 'collections' that you're familiar with are disqualified (eg, if you've read a lot of Discworld before, you can't use the new(ish) Discworld book for this.) The point is to have no preconceptions. It's easiest if the book has chapters, but that's not essential.

Read the first chapter or first thirty pages of the book.

Now, write the next chapter. You are permitted to reread the chapter you have just read to get names/details correct. You are not allowed to skip ahead and see what the author made happen, and you do not have to follow the blurb. Basically, you're taking the setup the author has given you in the first thirty pages, and moving forward, in whatever direction you like. You do not have to finish the story (after all, you can't do anything with the results of this exercise, as they include someone else's intellectual property), just continue the story for one chapter, adhering to the author's voice as best you can.

When you're done, you can compare yours to the author's second chapter, if you like. This part is not essential, and only to satisfy your curiosity. But you must write your version first!

If you're in a group, it can be a lot of fun for either everyone to use the same chapter and see where people's different thought processes brought them. If you have a very widely read group, though, it may be difficult to find a book that nobody has read - in that case, have each person bring a selection of books they know but think other people might not, and swap them around until everyone has something they haven't read.
